Dining Room

It’s Dad’s birthday.
He’s in New York
all weekend, showing off
his big new picture-novel.

We’re all standing around
the table with Mom’s chocolate cake
and cards we made
yesterday. She’s sipping something
with lemons.

Finally, we blow the candles
and sing “Happy Birthday”
to the curtains.

The song rattles the windows.
Then floor feels it,
and the door starts to shake,
and there he is!

So we start again.
