Night II

Here the night leaves

Our politicians denounce her.

We close dawn’s windows on her hands
as she climbs out of our houses.

We eye her like a servant rushing
mechanically to take our coats
and hope for the evening
she doesn’t come back.

What we do not know
is she will one day broker
a deal with light itself.
She will dress in street clothes
as the boys slip
from their girls to ask
the strange woman outside
if she needs
a ride home.
